Parenting and Families

Parenting is probably the hardest job you’ll ever do. We set out thinking about what we do and what we don’t want to repeat from our own experience of being raised. We try to ‘read’ our child and meet their specific needs.

Attachment-based parenting is effective. And challenging.

Whilst it’s true that your child didn’t come with an instruction manual, it really is possible to tune in and discover that they are the instruction manual. The most significant human needs have been ‘hardwired’ through 2 million years of human evolution (these are known as attachment needs, and they’re thoroughly fused into our brain and our nervous system). And, we all have at least 5 known brain circuits, gifted to us by mother nature to help us be effective caregivers.

Children instinctively seek to explore and grow – with our support. And children instinctively try to seek us for a different kind of support, when they need help with their emotions, protection, meaning-making, problem-solving, and more.

Our caregiving circuits get stressed and overwhelmed, and a bit lost really..…. and so we can get confused about our children’s needs, and even start to subtly  blame them for being so tricky.

Parents need help. A safe, quiet space to notice their children’s needs, notice their own struggles, and be helped with finding answers. This is known as reflective practice, and Al is always keen to bring a combination of important attachment framework and provide a supported space for you to reflect and grow in your parenting.

Al primarily uses the evidence-based framework of Circle of Security (COS) and has helped hundreds of parents focus on children of all ages (from infants right up to adult children well into their 40’s). Al was trained and then supervised for more than 60 weeks in the original COS Intensive framework (COS-I), as well trained and experienced in the more widespread COS-P (8-week group program).

With a well-grounded understanding of child developmental stages, trauma, neuro-diversity (ADHD and ASD) and emerging personalities of children, Al will offer an attuned process of discovery and support as you do the really hard part – parenting.
